When technology takes over, what jobs are left ?

Uber and Airbnb are just the latest in a line of companies that started as a crazy idea, but quickly trampled all over an entire industry. And just last week Ford announced that they will have a cheap driverless car in 5 years.

These changes are dazzlingly exciting for consumers of leisure travel, but the impact of automation on businesses looks likely to be even greater. When technology threatens to destroy jobs at such a fast pace, what skills should the travel industry be hiring ?

Tour operators usually favour staff based on their travel and not their technology skills, but does that now need a re-think ?

Should you hire people already armed with the right skills, or people who have a flexible approach?

Many expensive technical skills may be overtaken by automation, so is creativity, which software can’t replace, a better attribute ?

This session, chaired by Tigerbay MD Carl Morgan, and including travel technology industry experts, will discuss how technology affects the resource requirements within traditional travel businesses and how automation will impact on career choices of future generations.

Go Global Faster

Going global is a daunting prospect. Not only is there a huge job ahead localising content for each language market, you also need to know cultural sensitivities, expectations and preferences. Add to that the rise of personal devices for consuming travel content and you must now consider not just the written language but the actual relevancy of the information delivered to an individual. There is simply no way on earth to go global using the traditional processes of content creation and translation in the Millennial world, let alone do it with the necessary speed. The issue? There are too few human copywriters and translators - and they take time to do their work. In this workshop I’ll show you how technology can now replace many slow, human-centric processes, speeding time to market and reducing costs along the way. I’ll also pull back the curtain on a few future-facing technologies that will mean not just ‘going global faster’, but going global instantly.

A Travel How-to On Boosting Conversion Rates

Conversion rates in travel are notoriously low, usually in the low single figures, so much is to be gained from increasing conversion performance rather than focussing on further customer acquisition, particularly in a world of spiralling marketing costs.

This workshop by Cloud IQ will delve into the science of how a combination of machine learning, computational power, and artificial intelligence enabled conversion rate optimisation automation can achieve significant results at low cost. Cloud IQ will bring along a travel client to demonstrate this is not just theory but is working in practice.

Digital Marketing Masterclass

With content, and increasingly rich forms of content like video, set to play an increasingly important role for firms achieving search engine visibility and web presence, experts at Melt will provider delegates best practice insight and practical tips they can take away and implement in their businesses immediately to ensure they are not losing ground on their rivals.

Travolution@10 - The Digital Travel Masters

Ten years ago the impossible to ignore success of the online travel giants like Expedia and lastminute.com who emerged to challenge established players by exploiting new technologies prompted Travel Weekly to launch Travolution.

Was this an evolution or a revolution? Did they succeed in changing the travel industry out of all recognition? And what is their enduring impact to day, and what can we expect from disruptive new entrants in the future?

This year’s Summit will culminate with a keynote session in which we will try to answer some of those questions.

The session will be led by Travolution founder Simon Ferguson, now Travelport managing director for northern Europe, who will assess what has changed in the online travel sector over the decade we’ve been reporting on it against what the expectations were back in 2006.

He will also look at what he expects to change in the coming 10 years and, particularly, the impact he believes creative and entrepreneurial people with a disruptive spirit will have on travel as they look to bring their vision of the future to reality.

Simon will then introduce our esteemed panel of industry leaders, who have been at the cutting-edge of the evolution of the online travel sector during the last 10 years, for a top level discussion of the key issues and opportunities travel firms face in a digital world.

As a student, HolidayPirates founder Igor Simonow travelled around the world for bargain prices: to Rio for €200, to Miami for €250 or one day to London for €50. In order to share his knowledge of cheap travel deals with the community, Igor published the first HolidayPirates blog post in 2011. The hitherto unique concept quickly gained popularity, and as a result he teamed up with co-founder Sebastian Kaatz in 2012 to found the company HolidayPirates Ltd.

In addition to its native Germany, HolidayPirates is thriving in nine other countries and in seven different languages in the UK, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Poland, France and the USA.

A unique travel deal and inspiration source, the HolidayPirates editorial team publishes bargain hotels, flights and package trips which are researched daily and compiled from numerous other websites. With travel alerts on the app, in the newsletter and at HolidayPirates.com, you’ll always be well informed. You can keep up to date on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Google+ with all sorts of ideas for your next holiday or visit www.holidaypirates.com.
